High Spots of 1936

September

Sept. 3 School begins -- welcome Miss Lope, Miss Robe, and Miss Allen.
Sept 9 A very vivid account of the Agriculture boys' trip including Bob Dunevant's terrible mistake.
Sept 11 The seniors held their first class party in the form of a wiener roast. Plenty of eats and plenty of good appetites.
Sept. 12 Tryouts for the operetta in order -- Mr. Reed laboring hard, trying to select his Lawrence Tibbetts and Grace Moores.
Sept. 18 Seniors held their first class meeting. Everything running smoothly -- but who threw that eraser?
Sept 24 First operetta practice -- everyone anxious to leave to hear the great Louis-Baer combat. Baer seems to have fallen in the lot of the rest of us (always taking a beating).

October

Oct 1 Seniors are informed they can have an annual if they can make a go of it. Well, seniors, let's show our colors!
Oct. 4 Rebecca tells us what a fine state California is (I wonder if she has more reasons than one!).
Oct 5 "Come on there Ky. show us a little power." (High School Day at Ohio State University.)
Oct. 7 Juniors are having a regular pow-wow (trying to pick out class rings). The boys go into a huddle and decide they want something classy and showy -- you get the general idea -- and when they get their heads together -- well watch out!
Oct. 8 Fire drill -- "watch out there you might get scorched."
Oct. 10 Seniors trying to look beautiful (if that's possible) to have their pictures taken.
Oct. 11 Operetta cast practice again -- My, doesn't the town look large when looking down on the lights at night from a height? (Watermelon -- an out of season fruit.)
Oct 15 Whoops! A vacation! -- well almost. Operetta cast skip classes and go to the Opera House.
Oct. 16 Dress rehearsal. Harold Strobridge still gets that speech turned around! Let's only hope for the best!
Oct 17-18 "Strut your stuff" -- "and now that that's over watch the birdie and look beautiful."
Oct. 25 Teachers go to school for a change and pupils get a vacation.
Oct. 31 We are assigned our duties today (Annual Staff).

November

Nov. 8 Cafeteria Supper -- newly organized band displays talent and uniforms.
Nov. 10 Home Ec. girls and Agriculture boys have a party in the form of a square dance.
Nov. 14 Call out the fire department -- or the gas masks -- there's a strong smell of chlorine in the chemistry lab.
Nov. 15 First high school dance of the year. Mickey Post thinks the students should be allowed to dance with the faculty.
Nov. 19 Girls' basketball suits handed out -- girls vow to be county champs.
Nov. 22 Cheer leaders, those cute freshmen, perform for the first time at the opening game of the season at Jamestown.

December

Dec. 2 The juniors are sporting their new rings -- but the seniors still say theirs are the better looking. Anyway we're glad everybody is satisfied!
Dec. 3 Seniors -- Brr, ain't you cold! What a night for a coasting party! A swell hill and a regular northern wind -- they'll survive!
Dec. 13 (Friday too!) Mothers' night at the basketball game. Band marches and forms letters for the first time. "Virginia, did I hear you say you weren't superstitious?" All the same it is her unlucky night (just the small matter of a broken toe and sprained ankle).
Dec. 20 Teachers treated the high school -- Santa Claus appeared in person! (?) -- Where's "Cutie"? Now for a two weeks vacation -- hooray!

January

Jan. 1 Ring out the old -- in with the new!
Jan. 6 First day back at school after the holidays.
Jan. 15-16 Exams! 'nough said!
Jan. 17 John Williamson, in trying to help select a class motto, suggests "Give me Liberty, or any other five cent magazine."
Jan. 22 Practically snowed in by early evening -- closed school for the rest of week -- 22 degrees below -- Brr!
Jan. 30 Seniors select diplomas -- quite a classy piece of work they did too!

February

Feb. 6 After a few rounds today the seniors decide on sweet peas for class flower, simply because orchids and gardenias are too common.
Feb. 11 Mr. Deem asked Bob Preston what three words most used in school are. "I don't know," replied Bob. "Correct," said Deem.
Feb. 17 Mrs. Edwards takes her literature classes to Xenia to see "The Tale of Two Cities."
Feb. 23 Mr. Furst and Mr. Deem having the time of their lives using the radio system that is being dedicated. (A gift from the classes of '35, '36 and '37.)
Feb. 27 What, no water? "City" water works not in working order so school is dismissed.
Feb. 27-29 Undefeated -- County Champions. These words speak best for this year's girls' basketball team. The school also receives the Sportsmanship Trophy.

March

Mar. 7 Seniors and Juniors invited to "H.M.S. Pinafore," a presentation by the Antioch Players. Several seniors accept -- Jean Dunevant thought the leading man was swell!
Mar. 19-20 Junior Class Play -- takes you back to grandma's time.
Mar. 25 Since the juniors have "raked in" so much money, the seniors are hoping the banquet will be a "ritzy" affair.
Mar. 28 Senior Scholarship Test at Xenia. Charles and Harold succeed in holding up the good name of the school. This seems to be a day of many events -- Agriculture boys take a test in Xenia also. And last but not least, the high school orchestra played at the boys' hobby fair (Mr. Reed -- the perfect example of the absent minded professor).

April

Apr. 1 "Oh Mr. Orr, Miss Rife would like to see you in the hall -- April Fool!"
Apr. 3 Agriculture boys broadcast from WLW. They've practically landed jobs as radio announcers -- well, almost! Bryan high school orchestra plays for the second high school dance. Everyone thinks they are "swell"!

Apr. 23 Agriculture boys and Home Economics girls sponsor vocational night, a fashion show, F.F.A. degree work, etc.

May

May 1 Annual County Track Meet.
May 7-8 Seniors present "New Fires" using a double cast for the first time in the history of the school -- a "howling" success! -- a climax to a very happy high school career -- lots of fun but lots of work let us remind you!
May 15 Junior-Senior Banquet -- the juniors entertained the seniors at a gala affair. You'd have thought the King of England was giving a ball, judging from the well groomed crowd.
May 24 Baccalaureate Service. Rev. Hill preaches the sermon.
May 19 Class Night. The seniors are very generous in their bequests -- don't you think? The prophecy rather suits.
May 21-22 Final exams! The question in everyone's mind: "Did I or didn't I make the grade?"
May 25 Classes adjourn till September. Nobody is sorry except the seniors.
May 26 Commencement. Aren't you sorry they are leaving? Well they are! (Prof. McNutt gives the address.)
May 29 Alumni Banquet -- the final note!
