Notes from Bob Beatty...
Cedarville Class of 1937

Corry School

Bob Beatty

Corry school went through the 8th grade in the early 1920's. We only had 4 grades at the time it closed in the spring of 1929.

We walked home the 2 miles unless it was raining and then one of the neighbors would pick us up and take us home. Sometimes the car would really be crowded.

Corry school had a pump and well out in the school yard for drinking and washing hands. We had a stove in the middle of the room for heat. The coal was in a building out back and the boys would bring it in for the fire. Sometimes we would put things on the stove to heat for lunch.

The teacher and all the kids played lots of games and would choose up sides to play ball and other games.

Louise was always my pardner when we chose up sides. One time we were playing hide and seek and we climbed the fence and hid back of a tree. The class took up and they didn't find us. We thought we would be in trouble if we went back after they had gone in at noon, so we stayed out until recess time and we got back and mixed in with everyone. The teacher must not have missed us.

Cedarville School

I remember one time when some of us gave Mrs. Wilson a note saying "Why walk around half dead when we will bury you for $32.50." That didn't go down too good with her.

Before they added on to the school building, we had our ag or future farmer classes over in a room at the college.

When they added on to the school, they tore the old Corry School down and used the bricks in the new addition.

I think the class of 1937 was the last class to graduate from the opera house, and also the last class to have the class operettas there.

The bus drivers were all college boys.

The 1937 boys basketball team won 12 of 14 games on its schedule losing only to Ross twice. Five of the ten players were seniors. They won two games in the county tournament and lost the third to Ross again. Then they won one in district play and lost the second.

The girls basketball team won 15 of 16 games and then won first place in the county tournament. Five of the eleven players were seniors. I don't think they had a girls team the next year.

We had a dance band in 1937 and played for Yellow Springs (Bryan High) school dance.

Cedarville had two dances in 1937 and Kenneth Little's orchestra played.
